Aviles: El Nogal

When: 2007

Rustic restaurant with great food at reasonable prices.

Directions: Directly off Plaza España, opposite town hall in Avilés, 26km from Oviedo, Asturias.

El Nogal is rustic old style (decoration) restaurant in the heart of Aviles. It has smoking (upstairs) and non smoking (downstairs) areas. As you enter there is bar on the right hand side.

Staff are friendly, efficient and cheerful. The great thing about El Nogal is that they serve meals in the 'menu del dia' (3 course meal between 2 and 4pm, including drink - wine, beer or water and sweet) which are often inlcuded in their main weekend or evening menu, this allows you to try the dish for approx 7 euros to see which ones you prefer. At weekends and in the evening, the meals are more expensive but portions are huge.

The first time I ate there I ordered as I would for the paltry portions you get here in the UK and the waiter actually stopped me half way through and told me I would never eat it all!!! He was completely correct as the ensalada mixta (mixed salad) for starter was the size of a main course.

Food is of good quality and well prepared which means that El Nogal is always busy so it is advisable to get there early for lunch and if you speak Spanish to book at weekends. Because of the high quality and good prices people are prepared to que for a table, so be prepared to wait a little to be seated.

Highly recommended.
