La Candela

Placa de Sant Pere

Reviewed by: dsk from PA, review #3070

When: 2008

Romantic, delicious, and full of local atmosphere.

We stumbled onto La Candela in the Born neighborhood after not being able to find our intended restaurant, and what a stumble it was. It turned out to be our favorite restaurant of the trip.

When we arrived, at 11 pm, the restaurant was still active and lively. Most of the tables are set up casually in the Plaza in front of the restaurant, and against the marvelous side wall of a beautiful old church.

Service was wonderful; we were automatically presented with a menu in English, even though we only heard Spanish being spoken around us. Dishes were creative and delicious. We enjoyed pear and ricotta ravioli in a mint and cheese pesto, and a veal 'burger' served with a tartar sauce, and a vinagrette of capers and peppers. We couldn't resist trying the chocolate soup for dessert. For this, our three glasses of wine, and the incredible free atmosphere, (not to mention the street artist playing giutar), we paid about 50 euro.
