Looking for a beautiful, clean, comfy place to stay on the south Spanish coast? We highly recommend Casa Charlotte in Nerja. We just returned from a week there (May) and wish we could have stayed longer.

First, Nerja itself is delightful and not yet spoiled by the high-rise-mania of the rest of the Costa del Sol. Though it’s a popular tourist destination for Europeans (particularly Brits) with an active ex-pat community, it is still thoroughly Spanish, especially in the heart of town where Casa Charlotte is located. My daughter-in-law discovered the place on the Internet (they have a great website. She specifically wanted to avoid the glitzy condo rentals on the edge of town, opting instead for this lovely home, bedecked with flowers, on a quiet cobblestone residential street, just a few blocks from groceries, bakeries, shopping, restaurants, gorgeous beaches, and the famed esplanade Balcon de Europa. Right next door is El Chispa, a neighborhood bar and cafe, justifiably recommended for its seafood in Rick Steves’ Spain and Portugal.

Casa Charlotte is a newly renovated home, with three apartments - two 1-bedroom and one 2-bedrooms (plus sleeper couches). Since there were five of us - my husband and I, our son and wife, and her mother -- we took all three. With our doors open, it was just like sharing a big home. There are large rooms, modern well furnished kitchens, washing machine, a complete stereo system with drawersfull of CDs, satellite TV, balconies, and a rooftop terrace.

But the prize was our hosts themselves, Frans and Nuttee (themselves ex-pats) who did everything to make us feel at home, including a personal walking tour of the town with tips on their favorite places to shop and eat. During the week, Frans stopped by every so often to see if there was anything else we needed. We couldn’t have been better looked after.

Now we are just wondering how soon we can go back.
