apartments on a farm near Guernica, Basque Country WhenMay 2005, 4 days LocationThe Caserío Urresti stands in the countryside between Guernica and the seaside. The area is gorgeous but the Caserío is located in a tiny valley so you have to move a bit to enjoy the best of it. Nearby AmenitiesYou have to drive to Guernica for supermarkets or the little villages on the coast for grocery stores etc. The House/ApartmentThe building is a traditional Basque "Caserío" (a country house). The structure is really amazing (we had the possibility to see some not restored ones nearby) and the house is in good shape. The apartment has its own entrance and is very quiet. There are two apartments in the house and six double bedrooms, the owners also live on the premises and they are always there to help but never intrude in your privacy. The apartment (1bed/1.5bath) has a large kitchen/sitting/dining room and a tiny bathroom downstairs and a large double room and a whole bathroom with spa-shower upstairs. It's perfect for a family of four or four friends that do not mind not too much privacy as the double bedroom has no door and the only "serious" bathroom is upstairs, probably two couples would find it difficult to share. GardenThe area around the house is shared with the family, other guests and farm life. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe furniture was in good shape, all wooden (including a great canopied bed). The apartment is extremely clean and there's enough chairs and room for everybody. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe canopied bed was comfortable and I was told that also the sofa bed was. There's a full bathroom with a spa-shower upstairs and a tiny water-closet-basin downstairs, both are very well kept and very clean. KitchenThe kitchen was usable but it was not planned for serious cooking, in fact, breakfasts can be eaten in the main house with the other guests and the apartment is more a big suite with kitchenette than a place to cook serious meals. Problems or BonusesNo bad surprises. The good surprise was the kindness of the hosts; they are super nice and helpful without intruding in your privacy. They even invited us at a show of Basque dances at their daughter's school; it was one of the highlights of our stay! Agency and Representatives (and price)The owners live in the house, I'm sorry but I don't know if they speak English (I speak Spanish). They don't have their own website so when you arrive you don't have a very clear idea of what to expect. You can view the property here though: Top Rural Caserio Urresti. I found the property through Special Places to Stay and dealt directly with the owner. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I'd stay again and recommend anybody who looks for comfortable accommodation in the area. Things to do in this areaDon't miss the Bosque de Oma (a painted wood nearby) and the coast from San Sebastian to Bilbao, walk around as much as you can.
