3bed/1bath apartment in Letter District, Madrid

Amor de Dios Apartment, photo by steve.3po3po.com

When

February 2007, 4 days

Location

My family, two adults and three children rented a three-bedroom apartment on Calle del Amor de Dios in Madrid.

The apartment was great. The landlord, Nathalie, is wonderful and the location on Amor de Dios is perfect.

The apartment is in the Letter District of Madrid. It is a wonderful neighborhood, not too touristy, yet close to all the major attractions. The neighborhood had a wonderful ambiance. The apartment is two doors down from La Sanabresa, one of the best restaurants in Madrid.

Nearby Amenities

There are a number of cafes and grocery stores right in the neighborhood. We had everything we needed in walking distance.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is located in well-maintained historic building. The apartment is not quiet because it's in the middle of the city, which means there will be noises throughout the day and night. Since I grew up in a large city, it is nostalgic to me to be able to hear the city rhythms at night. But it really wasn't too bad either since the apartment is located on the US 4th floor. There are maybe 20 apartments located on five stories in the building.

Garden

There is not outside sitting area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in excellent shape. The beds are very soft and comfortable. There are more than enough towels for everyone, and the apartment was spotless. It's a fabulous apartment.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

There is one bathroom with a full bath and shower. All fixtures are new and work properly.

Kitchen

There is a fully stocked kitchen. Has everything one needs to cook a full meal.

Problems or Bonuses

We loved the location of the apartment, which in a beautiful Madrid residential neighborhood. We loved the quiet morning walks through the neighborhood. Every morning, we'd walk down to the neighborhood chocolate place to have cafe con leche and hot chocolate with churros and porros. After that we walked Calle Huertas to get to the attraction planned for the day.

The apartment had a nice sunny, airy feeling. It had a high ceiling, and the hardwood floor brought the warmth of the room out.

One "problem" we had was with the intercom system. I knew the apartment was on the European 3rd floor, but there are a number of apartments on that floor and I didn't know which intercom button to push to notify the owner, who was waiting for us upstairs. Since I had no cellphone in Spain, it took us about 15 minutes to finally straighten this out. I would recommend future renters to note the intercom instruction prior to arriving.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We worked through the agency Only Apartments. The booking process was straightforward. The agency contact person was polite and spoke excellent English, and she even called me during the booking process on her own just to make sure I had no more concerns. The owner, Nathalie, was at the apartment to greet us when we arrived in Madrid. She was an excellent host and a delightful person to deal with.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, we would stay there again. We loved the apartment, the location, and the city of Madrid.

Things to do in this area

We had a great time in Madrid. My favorite attraction in Madrid is the Thyssen Museum. It is one of the great museums in the world, yet it cost only a €6 admission ticket (and children are free), and there was NO LINE on a Sunday morning. We had all this great art work to ourselves.

We did not have one disappointing meal during our entire stay. Everything was delicioso. And I can't believe how inexpensive good wines are in Spain. Ribera del Duero is often around €10 or in the low teens for a bottle in restaurants.

During the trip, we visited Palacio Real, walked all over Calle Huertas, dined on Plaza Santa Ana, watched the crowd on Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor at night, and rented boat in Retiro Park. Madrid and its people are both so beautiful.
