Review by Elizabeth from NC 1bed/1bath apartment in holiday village near Nerja, Andalusia - Costa del Sol WhenJanuary 2002, 3 weeks LocationEl Capistrano Village is a large apartment complex in Nerja, built in the 1970s for English and German expatriates. Although this apartment was on the ground floor, people considering apartments in El Capistrano should be aware that many rentals are on the third or fourth floor, up as many as 65 stairs. Ask about that when inquiring. Nearby AmenitiesA large grocery store is just outside the gates of the complex. The complex is on the main highway, probably on a bus line. It is a mile or two from the town. There are many restaurants in the town, as well as several good internet cafes, bars, shops, etc. The House/ApartmentThere are many apartments in the complex; there were probably at least a dozen on 3 floors in this particular building. GardenThere was a private terrace and small garden with this apartment. There was a large pool outside the apartment but it was closed for annual maintenance when we were there. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe furnishings were not great, but ok, except for the beds which were like army cots and very uncomfortable. The house was cleaned every Saturday by a maid. The kitchen was poorly furnished. There is no TV. There was a pretty good collection of books. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds were very uncomfortable. The bedrooms were Spartan. There was no hot water for the first week + that we were there. On our 2nd or 3rd complaint the hot water was finally fixed. KitchenThe kitchen was one wall of the living room. It was poorly furnished. I had to buy a skillet at the market. Problems or BonusesWe traveled for nearly a year and stayed in 20 self-catering places for a total of six months. This was one of only two that we really didn't like. We rented it for three weeks but left after two. We were there in January. 1. She advertises her apartment under "golf in Spain" on the web. There was no golf course for 40 miles. We went there for golf! 2. The web site shows swimming pools and beaches, but the owner didn't tell us the pools are drained and repaired in January, and that it's really too cold to swim on the Costa del Sol in January. Guess we were expecting maybe Florida! Agency and Representatives (and price)The owner uses an agency to handle her apartment and greet her tenants. We found them to be rude and uncooperative. As mentioned above, it took about 10 days and more than one complaint to get any hot water. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? No. That's why I'm posting this notice. We stayed in many wonderful places but this one was not well managed. I object to that and the lack of comfortable bedding and an adequately stocked kitchen. Things to do in this areaNerja is very quiet, and quite a distance from other places of interest. The beach is nice. The town is quaint and not filled with highrises like many others on the Costa del Sol. We were bored there after two weeks. In retrospect, we really wished we had stayed in Marbella instead -- better location, much more to do. But for a quiet place to spend some time, Nerja is fine.
