apartments on an estate near Besalu, Catalonia - Costa Brava WhenMay 2009, 5 days ReviewCan Cruanyes is a farm house converted to three vacation rentals in Catalunya in North Eastern Spain, with the La Garrotxa Volcanic Park to the South, the Pyrenees to the North, and the Costa Brava beaches and seaside villages an hours drive to the East. Girona is a 40 minutes drive to the South and Barcelona is two hours by train from Girona. It is an ideal location for exploring this area, especially if you do not want to stay in a city or large town. We had rented the one bedroom apartment but were upgraded, at no extra cost, to the two bedroom apartment, which had also just been remodeled. Donny and Shiobhan, a young couple from Ireland has just taken over the management of this place from Donny's Dad, Dennis. They are making changes to the place and called it a 'work in progress' when we were there. See my trip report for how this really worked out to be an amazing bonus for us. You enter a narrow corridor with a full bath to your right and a little wash room to the left. The full bath has a shower tray but no bath tub. The corridor opens into a small kitchen area to your left and the living/dining area to your right. The kitchen has a cooking range, fridge, washer and sink. We did not cook any full meals but it's equipped with cutlery and crockery to do that if you want. The living / dining area opens into a little balcony. There is a fireplace (wood provided outside) that we did not use. The TV has numerous BBC channels. The two bedrooms open out into this living/dining area. One room is larger than the other and has a built in closet. The smaller room has shelves and is probably more suitable for children than two adults. The one bedroom and three bedroom apartments are adjacent but private. Dennis and Shiobhan live upstairs. There is another house behind but we did not ever bump into the person living there -- an ex circus clown, we were told -- her retired performing chickens wander free range. The whole setting is very scenic with the Pyrenees stretching as far as the eyes can see. There is a large estate surrounding the farm house and includes a swimming pool, which was not ready yet when we were there. There are a few other houses around but well spread out -- I don't believe we saw another person or car. A car is essential. The nearest village is Tortella. The website says it is a 15 minute walk but I would not bet on that -- parts of it are steep, too. Otherwise the village is charming and the bars (also serve food) have a warm rural ambiance. Both the website and my trip report have more details. I strongly recommend this place for anyone seeking peace and quiet in a rural area with large towns and beaches within an hour's drive. Shiobhan and Donny are very easy going pleasant folks and very prompt with responses via e-mail. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
