Cully: Hotel Au Major Davel

near Lausanne

Reviewed by: Kaydee from TN, review #942

When: April 2005

Small hotel right on the shores of Lake Geneva, near Lausanne. Beautiful view and excellent restaurant!

The Hotel Au Major Davel is a small hotel with 12 rooms. The entire ground floor is a restaurant, with an outdoor terrace in warmer weather. I suspect the major business here is the restaurant, though we found the hotel very comfortable and would definitely stay here again. It is recommended in the Karen Brown guide for Switzerland.

We had a large corner room overlooking the lake with a big comfortable bed. Our daughter had a good night’s sleep on a convertible sofa. The bathroom was large with an excellent shower. Overall, the room was spacious, comfortable and clean.

The hotel offers a special that includes the room, breakfast and a five-course dinner for two people for 260 CHF (about $220). We had elected to take the special and then paid separately for our wine and our daughter’s breakfast (10 CHF or $8.50) and dinner (35 CHF or $30). This turned out to be a great deal. Our meal was absolutely wonderful: melon with parma ham, shrimp with asparagus, a delicious veal mignon with vegetables, cheese, and crème caramel. Our daughter ordered off the à la carte menu and really enjoyed her beef and pasta.

Breakfast the next morning was very simple: breads, jams and butter, juice and hot drinks. The hotel staff spoke good English.

The hotel is located in the small lakefront village of Cully, about 20 minutes from Lausanne. The hotel has a wonderful location right on Lake Geneva with beautiful views looking out over the lake and the mountains beyond. The Cully ferry dock is just outside the hotel and there is a nice park area fronting the lake. Cully is at the base of the Lavaux wine-growing region; the amazing terraced vineyards rise up from the lake on the very steep hills and are visible from the hotel. Although we stayed for just one night while traveling from Provence to Bavaria, we would have enjoyed spending several days in this beautiful place.
