Engelberg: Hotel Banklialp

Reviewed by: kaydee from TN, review #1209

When: July 2005

A three-star hotel with a good restaurant and an amazing view. Located ten minutes from the Engelberg train station.

We stayed one night at the Hotel Bänklialp at the beginning of a 14-day walking trip in the Swiss Alps. The hotel is a ten minute walk from the Engelberg train station, and up a slight hill. They do offer a pick-up service at the station which we appreciated, and the manager who met us spoke very good English and was very welcoming.

The hotel has 60 rooms. We had a large triple room, very clean and comfortable. The best feature of our room was the balcony that looked down over the valley, the village, and the mountains all around us. It's a very beautiful setting. The trail where we began our walk actually runs right up next to the hotel.

We also recommend the hotel restaurant. Our package included half-board (breakfast and dinner), and we ate in a special dining room with other half-board guests, eating off a set menu of four courses. The regular restaurant (with outdoor terrace) looked a little more lively with an extensive menu. The breakfast buffet the next morning was substantial: fruit, breads, meats, cheeses, cereals etc.

Engelberg is a good base for outdoor activities in summer or winter. You can hike up into the mountains or ride a cable car. The trip up to Mount Titlis (glaciers) is a popular excursion, but you can also take a cable car up to the Trubsee for a nice lunch at a mountain lake. We can testify that it's a challenging walk up to the Trubsee!
