Very comfortable Swiss hotel in the exquisite village of Guarda in the Engadine. Magnificent views in every direction. Excellent dining room, too.

We spent just one night in the village of Guarda, near St. Moritz in the Engadine region of Switzerland. (This was an overnight stop traveling from the northern lakes of Italy to Salzburg, Austria.) We stayed in Guarda at the recommendation of fellow Slow Traveler Bob the Navigator, and our stay there was a highlight of 2-1/2 months in Europe.

The small village of Guarda sits high above the main road, surrounded by mountains in every direction. The village is absolutely perfect... accessible for tourists, but not touristy whatsoever. There are two hotels, a little grocery store, two or three shops. It seems mainly a farming area. Hiking trails head off in every direction. The Piz Buin hotel is at the very end of the village. There's a nice outdoor area with lawn chains for relaxing, and also an outdoor hot tub. Indoors there's a sauna.

The hotel is an old farmhouse. We were a group of four, traveling with our teenage daughter and her friend. We had two spacious rooms on the second floor, both with big balconies. The rooms are very Swiss (wooden furniture, crisp white duvets) really delightful.

We had our dinner at the hotel, an excellent meal in an attractive dining room. The breakfast the following morning was included. If you are staying more than three nights, you could take half-pension with dinner included.

The waitress and the hosts were friendly and helpful. Some English is spoken. The language in this part of Switzerland is Romansch.

We hope to return to Guarda and the Piz Buin for a longer stay to take advantage of the hiking and the fresh mountain air.
