When: July 2005

A comfortable and economical two-star "hotel" on the lake.

We stayed for two nights in Lucerne near the end of "Our Grand Tour of Europe." I was shocked at the hotel prices in Lucerne in July, complicated by the fact that our family needed a triple or family room. I was looking for something economical but interesting and found the Villa Maria.

The Villa Maria is kind of a guesthouse or large B&B with ten rooms. We had a large room that slept three people on the second floor. When I made the reservation by e-mail, I had asked for an en-suite room. Maria wrote me back that she had two possible rooms for our family, and I should have paid more attention to her response. We ended up with a large corner room for three on the second floor facing out over the garden. Our room had an ensuite shower (kind of built into a closet) and also a sink in the room. But we did have to share a toilet located in the hallway, which would not have been our preference. It worked out fine, and of course was only for two days. There may be some double rooms with all elements of the bathroom en-suite. The room was a somewhat hot in late July, and when we opened the windows we did get some noise from the street, even though we were on the back of the house.

The Villa Maria is located down the lake from the old town, toward the Lido beach and the IMAX theater/transportation museum. We walked to the Villa Maria from the train station... a bit of a long walk with luggage. There's a bus stop just down the street, and we ended up taking the bus a couple of times though we also enjoyed walking along the lakefront.

Maria sells tickets for the ferries and the mountain excursions (we went to Rigi on this trip), and we were able to catch the ferry from the Lido stop... very convenient.

Maria is a very friendly and helpful hostess who speaks English. She serves a good breakfast in her little dining room, and there are also tables out in the pretty garden. She was very flexible in allowing us to leave our luggage at the villa until our afternoon train time.

We paid {the equivalent of} about $150 for a triple room, including breakfast. If you are looking for an economical and pleasant accommodation in Lucerne, I recommend this hotel. Note that the "season" runs from March 1 - November 15 for booking.
