Vacation rentals in Switzerland (chalets, farms, apartments)
Review 1410: Owner, River-House
2bed/1bath apartment in Zermatt, Valais
September 1999, one week
This apartment is located in the Winkelmatten area of Zermatt and feels like it is at the base of the Matterhorn. It is located close to other buildings but still has a countryish feel to the area. There are other apartments in the building and I don't remember the number of the one that we stayed in. We very much enjoyed the area we were in. We also enjoyed eating our meals at the table where we could stare up at the Matterhorn.
There are restaurants and a small grocery store nearby. There are larger grocery stores in downtown Zermatt.
The building was in great shape and was very clean. The Swiss live up to their reputation for cleanliness. The apartment was very quiet. Not sure how many other apartments there were in the building but the owners did live there at the time we visited.
We had a large balcony where I hung our clothes to dry after handwashing them. It was a private balcony. I think we, also, had access to a lawn area.
The furniture was modernish. Nothing to write home about. And it was comfortable. The apartment was very clean. There was a generous amount of seating. There is a TV, games and books.
The bedroom was very comfortable. There are shutters on all of the windows, of course. The bed we slept in was two twins pushed together with twin comforters to sleep under. We had ample storage area too.
The bathroom had a tub with a shower and was clean and modern.
It was not a very large kitchen but there was enough pots, pans and dishes to have a normal simple meal.
Problems or Bonuses
My only complaint about the apartment was the strong stale cigarette smell. We visited quite a few years ago so this may have changed. I hope so. Other than that we found it to be a lovely, simple place to stay.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
I dealt directly with the owners by internet and they were very kind and helpful. The ad is a good representation of what we found.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes, I would stay here again. That view! I would warn people about the possibility of the smell of cigarettes.
Things to do in this area
There is so much to do in this area. Hike, ride the funiculars, hike, ski (even in summer), eat, hike, shop, people watch, helicopter rides, mountain climb and horseback rides. This is an oustanding area of natural beauty. Cars are not allowed in Zermatt. We took the train there and took the electric taxi to our accommodations.
