Review 2786: Alphaven, Apartment A

Review by Mary-Lynn G from Canada

apartments in Engelberg, Central Switzerland

May 2007, 5 nights

Alphaven is a beautiful house on a hill in the lovely town or 'dorf' of Engelberg which is a 30-minute drive from Lucerne. A winding street takes you up to the house which has neighbours on either side but set far apart for privacy and the neighbourhood is very quiet with beautiful views of the valley.

Nearby Amenities

The town of Engelberg is a short four-minute drive from the house (10-15 minutes on foot) where there's a COOP and a Migros supermarket with all necessary essentials and for later shopping, the Esso station at the "Stans Sud" exit off the AutoBahn (15 minutes drive) is open until 10:00pm. There are several restaurants in Engelberg & many more in Lucerne (30 minutes drive).

The House/Apartment

The house is a modern Swiss chalet style with four apartments. The first apartment up one flight of stairs is Apartment B, then up another flight to Apartment A & one last one to get to Apartments D & C. The area is very quiet as is the apartment as we heard no noise at all. There is a washer & dryer available for use located just opposite Apartment B and a sauna with separate shower as well.

We stayed five nights in Apartment A, which is the owner's apartment, and is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! It is an open concept plan with the den, living room, dining room & the modern kitchen in one large area and set in the center is a beautiful modern fireplace. The outside facing wall of the entire apartment is ceiling-to-floor windows with outside horizontal blinds controlled from the inside - very hi-tech ! There is a laptop with Internet access available for guest use and the TV has both Swiss cable and UK satellite channels in addition to a DVD player and an ample selection of current films.

The balcony extends from outside of the master bathroom all around the apartment to meet a large patio area & small garden with table, chairs, BBQ and beautiful hot-tub for exclusive use of the Apartment A renters. The views of the Swiss Alps & the valley below are the most spectacular that I have seen from any rental property I have ever visited. To sit outside in the morning with your coffee and take in the views was absolutely amazing - and to soak your aching muscles in the hot tub after a day of hiking or sightseeing with a nice glass of Swiss wine was so relaxing. There is no pool but the hot tub more than makes up for it.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment furnishings are modern and comfortable with a leather sofabed that can sleep two and ample seating for four for relaxing and for eating. The apartment itself was immaculate.

The bedroom has an enormous en-suite bathroom with shower & sunken bathtub & is located in a separate area just off the main room with amazing views from the wall of ceiling-to-floor windows. There is a second small bathroom off the main area next to the front entrance.

The kitchen has every modern appliance in stainless steel and all necessary cutlery, utensils, dishes, glassware & pots for a family of four. The outside BBQ was an added bonus to prepare some bratwurst sausages a la Suisse style with some of their delicious potato salad.

Problems or Bonuses

No problems whatsoever!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner - Ursula, who lives in England, was extremely helpful through our e-mail correspondence & provided all necessary information on where to shop, restaurants etc. The description & pictures from the Alphaven website reflected the place perfectly but it's even more breathtaking in person.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND any apartment at Alphaven and if ever I had the opportunity to return to Switzerland would DEFINITELY return to this beautiful area.

Things to do in this area

Engelberg has year-round skiing on Mt. Titlis, beautiful hiking trails, and a good choice of restaurants & hotel accommodations available. It is also a short 30-minute drive from Lucerne which is one of the most beautiful cities I have had the pleasure of visiting. The Lake & promenade area are beautiful and there are tons of restaurants, terraces & shops to explore. Bring lots of money.
