Review 3016: Graf-Kammer, Apartment Oest
2bed/1bath apartment in Lauterbrunnen, Berner Oberland
2nd to 9th June, 2007, 1 week
Apartment Oest is situated in the centre of Lauterbrunnen with a short walk to all amenities and transport. There is a small supermarket, bakery, hotels, restaurants, visitors centre, laundromat and Internet access available in the main street.
Apartment access is through the main door of the house and up two flights of stairs. The owners who speak English live in the house but we did not see them very much during the week we were there. There is free parking for a car close to the premises.
The apartment consists of one floor with living area and kitchen together, separate bedroom and separate small bathroom. A bedroom loft is reached by a ladder and would suit older children. The living area has a large skylight in the roof and a large window looking east with views to the meadow and the escarpment. Some waterfalls were visible from the window. It was also a great place to sit at the end of the day and watch birds.
The modern kitchen has an electric four-burner hotplate and full oven. There is plenty of cooking pots and pans, dishes, glasses etc. We cooked every night and found everything we needed. The living-room furniture comprises a table, six chairs, TV, divan/bed and two easy chairs. Everything in the apartment was very clean. There is no washing machine in the apartment but a laundromat is in the main street. We spent 40 CHF doing two large washes. That is, washing and drying.
The bedroom has a queen bed, wardrobe and small bedside lights. A window looks out to the escarpment. The bathroom with shower and toilet was small but modern.
There are two apartments at this address but we did not see the other one. We thought the price was very reasonable at CHF 72 a day. We were not asked for a deposit but the owner requested we pay the full amount in cash. We did have a little difficulty finding the apartment as the map was not very clear but access to it is about 40 metres south of the Schultzen Hotel, which is on the main street. A requirement staying at this apartment is that you remove your shoes before you enter, to protect the timber floor. Unusually the owners require guests to provide their own toilet paper! There is no outdoor area to sit.
We were very pleased with this apartment and would recommend it. We loved the small town of Lauterbrunnen with its small village appeal and the magnificent views in the valley where it is situated. We did many easy walks in the area and thoroughly enjoyed our excursions to Murren, Wengen and Grindelwald.
