Review 3039: Adams Alpine Eden, Blumlisalp Apartment
apartments in the center of Kandersteg, Berner Oberland
July 2007, 4 nights
Perfect location. Kandersteg is a delightful mountain town at the end of a long valley south of Spiez (Spiez is on on Thuner See - Thunder Sea - near Interlaken). Adams Alpine Eden is a renovated old hotel right on the main street in the center of town. The owners live on the ground level and there are two apartments on each of the second and third floors.
It was great being in the center of this charming mountain town. The building is on the main road, but it does not get much traffic. Kandersteg is a perfect location for a hiking/walking vacation.
You are in the center of Kandersteg! The best cafe in town is one block south, the tourist office two blocks north, the Coop supermarket two blocks away (towards the train station). The Coop is small, but there is a very large one in Fruitigen, a larger town about 20 minutes drive.
The house is an old hotel that the owners renovated about 10 years ago. It is in very good shape and the apartments are well maintained. There is high speed Internet in all the apartments. A staircase goes up to each level and has bookshelves in the hall at each level - these are full of books, videos and DVDs that you are welcome to use (and take any books with you that you did not finish while you were there). There is a laundry room, with washer and dryer, on the ground level. Parking is just outside the building.
There are four vacation rental apartments - two on each floor - and the owners live on the main floor. You don't hear any noise between the apartments.
We had a small balcony off our living room where you could look out over the town and to the mountains. There is a nice shared garden area behind the house.
The furnishings are simple but comfortable. There are three large comfortable chairs in the living room, a round dining table with four chairs. This apartment had one bedroom and an extra sleeping loft the overlooks the living area.
My only complaint was that the bed was a bit uncomfortable. I think it was a foam mattress. The bathroom is very nice with a deep tub and over the tub shower.
The kitchen is good. There is a nice sized refrigerator (they leave you some food essentials like milk, butter, jam, bread, etc.) and a good stove. The dishwasher is the type that sits on the counter and attaches to the sink facet, but it worked very well. There is not a lot of extra counter space, but we cooked all our meals here.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We spent two weeks here in fall of 2000 and when we had to make a quick change to our trip plan, I checked their website and was thrilled to see they had a vacancy. I phoned them and booked it the day before we arrived. (We had been planning to go from our stay in Leysin to England, but there was flooding in the Cotswolds where we were going, so we changed our plans).
So booking was easy - I phoned and we arrived the next day and paid with a credit card. The owners are very nice and are right there if you have questions or any problems. The price is about $800/week in summer.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes, I recommend this vacation rental. It is well priced and Kandersteg is a perfect location for a hiking vacation. The accommodations are not luxurious, but they are comfortable. We will stay here again.
Things to do in this area
Kandersteg is an excellent base for hiking. You don't need a car - there is good public transportation. Read more about Hiking in Kandersteg.
