Review 3041: Chalet Obendfreeden, Upper Apartment

Review by Jing from CA

1bed/1bath apartment in Brienz, Berner Oberland

June 2007, 2 weeks

This chalet is in the village of Brienz, on Lake Brienz. The chalet is about 5-10 minutes from the train station in a residential area.

Nearby Amenities

It's about 5-10 minutes to the main street with all the shops: Coop at one end and Migros on the other end; and many shops in between. There are a lot of restaurants and a few bakeries.

The House/Apartment

This is a well-kept two-story chalet. We rented the upper apartment and another couple was renting the lower apartment when we were there. The neighborhood is quiet with friendly residents.

The upper apartment has a balcony on two sides of the house with wonderful views. There are table, benches and lounge chairs.

The lower apartment has a patio and lawn.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment is well furnished and very clean. This is the German owners' vacation home and their care shows.

The bed was very comfortable and the window has a (well-appreciated) screen. The bathroom (shower, no tub) is good sized and very clean.

The kitchen is a delight. I cooked full meals here, it's well equipped with a dish washer, full-sized stove and a good-sized refrigerator; very good quality and plenty of pots & pans and dishes.

Problems or Bonuses

This is a great vacation rental!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The German owners are very responsive and very prompt. They didn't even require any deposit - complete trust.

Frau Ursula is the neighbor who manages the apartment for the owners. Although, she does not speak English, we were able to communicate with the help of her teenage daughter - very nice people.

The apartment is even better than their published information.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, we highly recommend this apartment. Brienz is a great place for a base for the Berner Oberland.

Things to do in this area

A good base to visit Ballenberg, the Jungfrau region, the lakes (Brienz & Thun). We also did daytrips to Bern, Lucern.

We did most of our shopping in the Coop and Migros. We did not eat out in any of the Brienz restaurant. However, we took the steamer boat across the lake to Giessback for a wonderful lunch at Hotel Giessback at Chez Florent. We also have a sit-down lunch at Jungfraujoch, Shilthorn in the rotating restaurant and on the Brienzsee steamer boat.
