Review 328: Hotel Spannort, Apartment Spannort
apartment in Engelberg, Central Switzerland
August 2002, 1 week
This apartment is on the top floor of a house on a residential street just two blocks from the main street of Engelberg. The owners of Hotel Spannort live in the main floors of the house. The apartment is very private. The house is built into the hill, so you enter from the street on the third floor. From the entranceway you go up one flight of stairs to the apartment. The owners also use this entranceway to get to their apartment, but each place has its own locking door.
There are other houses on the street, but the main balcony of the apartment looks out down the hill to the town and is private. The location is very quiet - no car or people noise. The location is perfect - one block downhill and one level block to the center of town, yet you are far enough up the hill to have a great view of the valley and the surrounding mountains.
The house is not old - it is modern construction.
You can walk to everything in Engelberg from this apartment. It is just a few blocks from the Brunni chairlift and 10 minutes walk to the Trubsee lift. Stores, restaurants and cafes are 2 blocks away.
There is a good sized Coop (grocery store) in town and a smaller Migros and a few bakeries.
This is a modern building. The owners live on the first three levels, the rental apartment is on the fourth floor. The owners run a local hotel and are not home often - so the house is very quiet.
The apartment was very clean (this is Switzerland!) and neat. There were not many supplies - just a few soap tablets for the dishwasher and a little dishwashing liquid. This is pretty typical for a Swiss vacation rental - plan on going out to buy paper towel, toilet paper, dishwashing supplies.
The apartment is built under the pitched roofline and has a lovely wooden slanting roof - so it is very high in the center of the room and lower at the edges. The floors are all tile, except for the bedroom which was carpeted. They have nice oriental carpets on the tile floors to make it warm and cozy.
There is a nice sized balcony off the living/dining room with a small table and chairs and an excellent view.
The furniture is all very nice and comfortable (leather couches in a TV area, leather chair and footstool in a reading area, round dining table). The apartment could use a desk - we ended up working on the dining table. The bedroom furniture is not great - comfortable bed but strange looking headboard and side tables (doesn't suit the very nice furniture in the rest of the apartment).
Two double beds together - very comfortable. The bedroom only has one window on the north facing uphill side of the hill and is dark. Fabulous big bathroom - all tile - with a nice tub and a large, separate shower stall.
The kitchen is a separate room off the dining area. It has a good sized fridge, electric stove, oven, dishwasher, drip coffee maker. No tea kettle (use a pot) or toaster. The stove top is one of those flat panel types where the heating elements are under the flat top. To start it you put your finger on a button - but it did not always work for me. It always turns on for Steve! Easy to use once you get that main button turned on. (Press the top button to turn on the stove, then the next button down to the left to also turn it on, then control each burner with the button beside its picture.)
Problems or Bonuses
Rudi and his wife who own the apartment speak English and were a delight to deal with. We paid our advance by credit card and our final payment a few days after we arrived, again by credit card. Very easy.
The washing machine is broken and they don't know when it will be fixed, but they did our laundry done at the hotel. There is a meter on the phone. We paid 32CHF for the week and we used the phone a lot (on the Internet).
Agency and Representatives (and price)
In Switzerland, contact the tourist office for the town you are planning to stay in. They have listings for all vacation rentals in the town. I picked this one because it was close to the center of town and I could book by email.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes, absolutely. And Engelberg is a good town for a hiking vacation.
Things to do in this area
You are 1 1/2 hours from Zurich, about 1/2 hour from Lucerne or Altdorf. Lots to do in this central Switzerland area. But you need never leave Engelberg. The hiking is excellent and there is easily a week's worth to do for either easy hiking or serious hiking.
