Review 3767: Owner, Apartment Stockli

Review by Kathryn J from OK

1bed/1bath apartment in Lauterbrunnen, Berner Oberland

August 2008, 7 days

Apartment Stockli was in the town of Lauterbrunnen - about 5-7 minute walk from the train station. It was on the main road through town but was slightly back from the road and the balcony and none of the windows faced the main road. It looked out onto Staubach Falls and a couple of other houses. We could also see the top of the Jungfrau when clouds permitted. Lauterbrunnen was a perfect size little town. It had all the basics including COOP, cheese shop, bakery, butcher shop, place to do laundry and several restaurants in the hotels. We could reach anywhere in the area by train, gondola or bus. It was a wonderful area.

Nearby Amenities

The nearest grocery store and restaurant were one to three minutes walk from the apartment. Everything in Lauterbrunnen was easily reached without a car.

The House/Apartment

The building was in very good shape and was quiet. It was close enough to the main road to hear some traffic noise at times, but only during the day. At night it was very quiet. There were two apartments in the building which was a three story building. Our apartment was up two flights of stairs, which I wasn't crazy about, but they really weren't as bad as I feared.

The rooms were all nice sized with plenty of room. There was an entry hall, bedroom, living room and kitchen. There were two closets with more than enough space (and hangers) for the two of us.

The only outside sitting area for our apartment was a balcony. The balcony was small, but big enough for the two of us to sit (for extended periods of time) and view Staubach Falls and the Jungfrau.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape and very comfortable. Everything was very clean and there were plenty of chairs in living room and kitchen. There were also three chairs for the balcony. There was a daybed in the living room that would sleep one other person. It would be perfect for a couple and one child.

The beds were comfortable and all the rooms were nice. The one bathroom was clean with a small shower - glass enclosed like others we have seen in Europe.

The kitchen was quite usable and I cooked most of our dinners there. The pots, pans and dishes were of adequate quality and I enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. I brought my own knives, but everything else was very usable. I did cook full meals with no difficulty. I am a spoiled cook and missed my microwave, but everything else was fine.

Problems or Bonuses

I was surprised that there were two flights of stairs to the apartment. I don't remember the website indicating the stairs. But it ended up being easier than I thought to navigate the stairs. As with other apartments I have rented, the actual apartment was slightly better than the pictures on the website indicated.

One of the biggest bonuses was the view of Staubach Falls. We also really enjoyed being so close to everything in Lauterbrunnen.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The onsite person was the wife of the couple who own the rental. She spoke enough English to communicate by email and in person with no real problems. As stated earlier, the apartment was slightly better than reflected on the website. We paid CHF 88 per night plus a CHF 60 cleaning fee. I thought it was a real bargain.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I highly recommend the Apartment Stockli and would definitely stay there again. We loved the Bernese Oberland and plan to return. I would also likely stay in Lauterbrunnen again because of the ease of getting everywhere in the area without back tracking.

Things to do in this area

We visited the Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn, Schnigge Platte, Grindelwald/First, Wengen, Murren and even went to Bern. The area is wonderful and very easy to navigate. The trains and gondola's are a delight. We only ate at the Oberland and Jungfrau hotel restaurants in Lauterbrunnen, and ate lunch at the sights mentioned above. I don't think we had a bad meal - except I didn't like the fondue.

It was a wonderful trip.
