2bed/1bath apartment in Weggis, Central Switzerland

August 30 - September 5, 2008, 7 nights

The apartment was the bottom floor of a two storey house in the town of Weggis. Weggis is on Lake Luzern and is about 30 minutes from Luzern. The apartment is on a hill and a few minutes from the downtown area of Weggis. It is on a very narrow, winding, private road and overlooks Lake Luzern. It was lovely. The older couple who live in the apartment upstairs were not intrusive, but were there if needed. The area was very nice.

Nearby Amenities

It was necessary to drive to everything. Groceries, restaurants, etc were about a five minute drive from the apartment.

The House/Apartment

The building was in good shape and very peaceful and quiet. It was a quite large apartment with large rooms, except for the kitchen being quite small. There was an entry hall, the bedrooms to the right of the hall and living room/dining room to the right of entry hall. The bathroom was next to the master bedroom. This was the only rental with the couple upstairs being residents of the area.

There was no pool, but it had a front porch with large table and chairs. There was also an umbrella and two chaise loungers, as well as a small charcoal grill. The landscaping was really wonderful - all maintained by the man who lived in the upstairs apartment. There was also a view of Lake Luzern and Mt. Pilatus.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was old but in fairly good shape. Everything was clean, but the chair and couches in the living room were pretty uncomfortable. We ended up bringing the lawn chairs into the living room the last couple of nights we were there.

The beds were comfortable, the bedroom quite roomy and there was plenty of space for clothes. There was one bathroom with a double sink and very large deep bathtub. There was a shower in the tub.

The kitchen was quite small but very usable. There were massive numbers of dishes, glasses, etc. The apartment could have hosted a fairly large party and the number of glasses, etc. indicates that some people do have parties. The pots, pans, dishes, etc. were of good quality. I cooked full meals and even though the counter space was limited, I was able to cook with no real problems.

Problems or Bonuses

No bad surprises. I think the landscaping, outside area and views were a pleasant surprise.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I booked with the Weggis tourist office and only had email contact with them. It was very good. The couple upstairs held the key. The wife spoke enough English to get by. The husband did not speak English. We paid 850CHF for the week. I think the apartment accurately reflected the published information. One thing about this apartment that was different than the other apartments I have rented in Europe is that they wanted to money for the rent at the beginning of the week and the others have waited until the end of the stay to collect payment. I was not prepared and had to tell her I wouldn't have all the money until the next day since I had already withdrawn our daily limit for the day it was requested. That didn't seem to be a big problem.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would probably not stay there again - but not because of the apartment. It would be that I likely would not stay in Weggis again. The town was pretty, but the restaurants were extremely expensive and after seeing the area once, I would likely go some place new rather than return. If the apartment were in another area I wanted to visit, I would likely stay there again. We did not need the second bedroom, so I would also look for a one bedroom apartment.

Things to do in this area

One of the reasons I would not return to Weggis is that most everything we did was someplace else. The Migros was closed every time we needed groceries - even during the day on a Tuesday. We only ate one meal in Weggis because the restaurants were so terribly expensive. 25 - 35 CHF for an entree at lunch was more than we were willing to pay. I didn't find Weggis to be a very convenient town to "live" in. We did take the boat to Luzern, drive around the lake to other small towns, and drive to Bellizona so we were entertained and I enjoyed what we did. We just didn't do much in Weggis.
