Report 1004: Cycling in Belgium and The Netherlands

Beside a windmill

For our last day, some people spent the day sightseeing in Amsterdam. The rest of us went with Jan for a last bike ride.

We crossed the river in a ferry with our bikes. The area we cycled was countryside with the water nearly always nearby. It was a cool, windy day but it was great to have that last ride.

Later in the day, Jan gave me some suggestions to sightsee in Amsterdam. I took a bus to the southern part of the city and walked around, then walked back beside the canal. My map helped me locate landmark buildings and I enjoyed being by the canals and the boats.

That evening, we went for a cruise on a canal boat. It was narrated, and we enjoyed it and our last stop at a bar. We all thought all the bars we had been in were very special - mostly antique-looking, with lots of nice furnishings, paneled walls, very welcoming.

The next morning I walked with my carry-on to Centraal Station and took a train to the airport (which is supposed to be 12 feet below sea level). I was going on to Italy for the rest of my trip.

I'll always consider this week of cycling to be one of my favorite times in Europe.
