Latte in Pisa

It was raining and cold (10 C) when I got up. Ida helped Gail with her luggage, as she was going home today. I showered quickly and stayed out of everyone’s way. We left for Pisa at 10, parked and walked through the tacky tourist stall area adjacent to the tower. Gail took pictures and then we hit the jewelry store. I bought two “stress pendants” and a Pisa charm, then told Ida and Gail I would be at the caffé. It was noon when I ordered my second coffee of the day. I took a wonderful photo of my latte and ashtray with the tower in the background. It pretty much sums up my trip: alone in a caffé de-stressing. Soon, Ida called me from a nearby restaurant they had chosen for lunch. I walked over to their table with two menus, went inside and got one for myself. It was cold and windy. I ordered pasta and a grilled steak, pacing in the sun to keep warm between courses.

We left for the airport where Ida parked illegally and went in to help Gail with her luggage and say good-by. I got out of the car, gave Gail a hug and wished her a safe flight. I waited by the car, and talked my way (in Italian) out of a ticket for where we were parked. Ida came out 40 minutes later and we drove back to Vico. I finished packing, and Ida and I spoke briefly about the tension between Gail and me. She cleaned the house in preparation for her husband and son’s arrival tomorrow, when she will drop me off at the airport for my flight home. We had a snack of cold cuts, then went up to the restaurant to say good-bye to Ida’s aunt and uncle. It was even colder when we got home, when Ida remembered she had bought space heaters last year when she was there. We plugged in two and soon the chill was off the air. Where were these for the last two weeks? Under my bed! It warmed me up considerably to schlep my bags down five flights of stairs, too.
