The first weekend of October my boyfriend and I traveled to San Luis Obispo, California, for four wonderful days of relaxing and exploring. I had never been north of Los Angeles so I was curious to see more of California. We caught an early morning flight from Baltimore via LA, leaving raining Baltimore behind for San Luis Obispo (or Slo, as the locals call it!) where the weather was nothing short of gorgeous: clear skies, sun shining, perfect temperature. After worrying whether our bags had made it (to call our connection in Los Angeles short would be an understatement; we got off the first plane at 9:40 and our connection left at 9:50!) we took off with the BF's parents.
I guess I should explain the title of my trip report: Since people refer to San Luis Obispo as SLO, I thought it was just the funniest thing to think of new ways to use SLO - and one of them was to name the area south of SLO, well, SoSlo (like SoHo or SoCal) and the area north of SLO, NoSlo (like NoVa - Northern Virginia.) Anyway, I think I was the one laughing the most at this joke (and we all know it is not a good sign when you think your own jokes are really funny), but my main point is that both areas were awesome. NoSlo, SoSlo - it's all good to me. Our first stop was a beautiful winery: Edna Valley Vineyard. My favorite part was the panorama windows behind the bar where they served the wine. We picked up some wine and headed south towards Arroyo Grande. We stopped at a great vegetable stand, which made me think that what I pick up at Safeway is not really vegetables.
One of the best things about this trip was getting to stay at my boyfriend's parents' lovely new house. A beautiful guest room, awesome BBQs and fun company made it a great weekend. Who doesn't love a little pampering!! I especially enjoyed my daily afternoon naps. Oh, and the beach of course! Our first afternoon was spent at Pismo Beach, where I was just so happy to see the ocean again – I miss it!
Saturday we lounged over a tasty breakfast before going for a walk and heading to Avila Beach for lunch. On the way, we drove into See Valley and visited an apple farm where we got to taste apples and ciders just as in a wine tasting. I discovered the best apple ever, Jonalicious. Mmmmm... Then we ate great fish tacos at the Old Porte Inn and enjoyed hanging out in the sun. After another afternoon nap, BF and I headed towards San Luis Obispo. I had read about the Madonna Inn before coming, so we made a quick stop. All I have to say is “Wow!” You haven’t seen kitsch or camp or even tacky until you’ve been there. We enjoyed checking out SLO before having dinner at Grappolo. Tasty Italian food always hits the spot.
