Destinations: Countries - France; Regions/Cities - Paris Categories: Hotels/B&Bs; Art Trip; Foodie Trip; Shopping; Sightseeing; Independent Travel; 2 People Page 1 of 6: Arrive in Paris. Lunch at Cafe du Marche. Walking Around the 7th. Dinner at Café Constant
So Many Glasses After an easy flight, we arrived in Paris around 10:00am. Took the RER into the city to Ecole Militaire and found our hotel, Hotel du Cadran on the Rue Champs du Mars. This was our third real trip to Paris. We love the 7th, especially the area around the Rue Cler; we know the streets and the shops and particularly enjoy the familiarity of returning to this neighborhood. We checked into the hotel easily then walked over (not even half a block) to the Café du Marche. We were a little fizzy from fatigue, but sank right into Paris eating. I had the confit de canard, and Nick had a lamb shank. We walked over to St. Dominique and checked out a couple of restaurants for dinner. We then returned to the hotel, closed the curtains, turned on our little “white noise” machine, set the alarm clock for 6:00 and took a long nap. We woke up feeling (almost) on Paris time. After walking over to the Eiffel Tower to see it sparkle, we went to the Café Constant for dinner. On our last trip to Paris we’d had dinner at Le Violon d’Ingres (the one star Christian Constant restaurant); we loved our meal and had made plans to return. We hadn’t planned to eat at his café (more casual, no reservations) because didn’t think we would want to eat the same person’s food twice. But the menu looked so good and the restaurant so cozy, we walked in. It was a great dinner. I had the tartare d’huitres et saumon et gingembre. Raw oysters and salmon sliced thin and dressed in olive oil, lots of crackly black pepper and fresh ginger. It was WONDERFUL. I loved it so much I managed to have variations two more times (which, if you stick with me, you will read about below). Nick started with potage du jour — cauliflower and something else we couldn’t identify. Not as spectacular, I thought, as my oysters, but he really liked it. I then had cote d’agneau roti de l’ail mousseline, parfume a la truffles. Two beautiful lamb chops with this rich winy sauce and mashed potatoes “perfumed” with truffles. Nick had boudin blanc et pommes de l’ail. We had a bottle of Cotes de Rhone, Reserve Perrim, and then shared dessert called quenelles chocolate et crème anglais. The “quenelles” were two dense little egg-shaped balls of chocolate (kind of like a chocolate butter ball) floating in crème anglais. Two coffees. The bill was about €75 (about 24 of which was the wine). |
