Thursday Arrived at Logan at 6:00 for our 8:00 flight. Hooray! Great excitement. We’ve been planning this trip with my extended family for over a year. Evan has his life-sized stuffed cat Whiskers under his arm, which startles many people because of how realistic it is. Stood in line with far too many people belonging to a town choral group who insist on singing. Hope they sound better in a concert hall. Learned that flight has been delayed two hours. Nice lady at British Air tells us that we will hopefully make another connection to Rome, but it is uncertain if our baggage will make the connection. Boys have last hamburger, we explore the delights of Logan, and finally board at 10:00. Boys slept; parents didn’t.

Friday Arrive at Heathrow. I remember nothing about this, Larry tells me I was there. I do not cope well with jet lag. Arrive in Roma. Our baggage doesn’t. Larry stands in line for almost an hour to make arrangements for wayward baggage. No chairs in this circle of Hell- I sit down on the floor with the kids. Evan falls asleep on the floor with his head resting on Whiskers. People steal glances our way- do they think we’re Gypsies? Maybe I can pick up some lira.

Woohoo! Assuming they find our bags, they will get them to our hotel in Fiano Romano. Clutching our printout from SlowTrav, we find the Europe Car desk. Thank you, Pauline! Without you, we would not have found that elevator! Finally get car- a diesel station wagon. I can't believe that it's after 4 already! Thank goodness we had decided to stay just north of Rome. Drive about 40 minutes, find our Best Western in the middle of a field in Fiano Romano. Nice, soothing place with lovely pool and kind waiters in the restaurant. A good choice for that first exhausting night. Boys begin to endure the first of many days of getting their heads patted by Italians. A short swim, a nice dinner. Collapse. Baggage arrives at 11:00.
