Page 14 of 20: Rome has Art, Too!

We all walk around this morning, seeing the sights. First we head for Michelangelo's Moses, in a very commercialized church, San Pietro in Vincoli. Then we go to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. One can close one's eyes and imagine the Roman legions marching through the Arch of Constantine. We all have dinner at a nice restaurant, and meet a nice boy at our hotel who is studying chemistry (like me!) at Pisa. Then a walk along the via Veneto, and some sitting at a café; what a lovely day.

It's morning again, and we head for the Sistine Chapel, which is disappointingly crowded. So I can't get a feeling for the dimensions. The Stanze Rafaelle are better. Then, after lunch, St Peter's, which is completely breathtaking. We climb to the top and get a wonderful panorama. The Bernini throne is very good; unfortunately I have my sunglasses on and so can't see that well.

Heading back home, stop at the Cancelleria and the Villa Farnese --- bad! But we also see "The Ecstasy of St Teresa" in Santa Maria della Vittoria, which is a gem of a church. After dinner, we go up to the Villa d'Este at Tivoli, which has beautiful grounds and fountains. Some young men pick us up by paying our check at a café. They drive us home and we arrange to see them Thursday evening.

Ugh, it's Wednesday morning and I have a sore throat. But this will not keep me in, and today we start at the Villa Borghese. This museum has the most beautiful Bernini sculptures, particularly "Daphne and Apollo." So much to see from every angle in this sculpture. After siesta, some shopping for gifts (and a sweater for me). And after dinner, we walk and walk and walk. The guys were really out in full force tonight, almost like fleas!
