Page 15 of 20: All Roads Lead from Rome

Only another day or so in Rome, so I have to figure out where next. But meanwhile, D and I set out for the Catacombs, which we reach only as midday closing time approaches. So we hitch back to the Domus Aureus, aka "Casa Nerone", which has amazing wall paintings.

An interesting afterlude to my earlier Roman adventures occurs today. We see Gianni at the American Express when we go there to get our mail. He is asking J how I am, when I greet him with a big "buon giorno." After seeming to follow me, and striking various poses, he finally dashes after me on his Vespa to say, basically "I'm sorry, and goodbye." I don't actually realize that I have an apology until later; D is amazed that an Italian male would apologize like that.

This evening we go out with the boys from Tivoli. They are a pretty miserable group, except (fortunately) for the one I am with. I may see him tomorrow evening, if I can get a late train. I've decided to go to Zurich, and then work my way through Germany to Brussels.

So I spend this morning (Friday) running errands and trying to call Buddy; I hope I can figure out how to meet up with him in Germany. We try to see the works by Caravaggio at Santa Maria del Populo, but it is closed. So I splurge and buy beautiful long black leather gloves for IL 6000 (nearly $10).

Finally, I reach Buddy at about 6pm. He will be out in the field this week (he is a medic at a field hospital) but I will try to reach him Friday. D and S have left for Firenze, but J and I end up having dinner with two nice young American boys. They all take me to the train. And now, goodbye to them, farewell J and arrivederci Roma.
