Page 16 of 20: Going Up North

After a fairly miserable night on the train, again sitting up in a compartment for eight, I arrive in Zurich with a cold. But the trip is made a bit more pleasant by some nice people in the compartment: A couple from Malta, and another Italian couple. I have a hard time finding a hotel, but just as I am about to give up hope, I find a really lovely place from "the book" (Europe on Five Dollars a Day). It's spic and span clean, and modern, and seems to be a jumping place. It's full of male athletes, and I think that I am the only girl on my floor. At any rate, I have the greatest shower of my trip so far: I'm ashamed of how dirty I am! Now I am really clean, and am ready for a good night's rest.

My first full day in Zurich is Sunday, and after breakfast, I go out with some Canadian girls from my hotel, then a lovely boat ride around the Zürich see. I am using my German, and it's not too bad. A nap, and then dinner. We walk out of one restaurant because dinner was 25 Swiss Francs (!) and end up having cheese fondue.

Now that it's Monday, I do some more serious sightseeing, walking all over Zurich. As return time is approaching, I go over to the Sabena office and reconfirm my flight: They are extremely helpful! I have always wanted to visit the Züricher Kunsthaus, with its many German Expressionist works, and it does not disappoint. The paintings by Franz Marc, August Mack, Oskar Kokoschka, Emil Kirchner et al are beautiful. The Kunstgewerbes museum, however, is a disappointment, because it has stage settings, not modern art as I had somehow expected.

While out walking, I run into the Maltese couple from the train, and they recommend a very nice self-service restaurant. Actually, I find the wrong one, but it is even nicer!

I've made some plans: Tomorrow, the train to Mainz. Then the Rheindampfer up the river from there to Köln.
