Page 19 of 20: A Final Train Ride to Brussels via Köln

We leave Berlin (Tempelhof Flughafen, as I had read so many times in German class!) and fly back to Hanover. There I collect my luggage and get on the train to Brussels, my last stop.

In my compartment is a very nice young German couple, and we get into various conversations. The young man tells me proudly that he heard Bobby Kennedy speak, when he famously said "Ich bin ein Berliner." Like some other Europeans I have met on this trip, he asks me a bit sadly how we could have let John Kennedy be assassinated; they really adored him.

I hadn't realized that we have a four-hour layover in Köln, from about midnight to 4am; the couple tell me that last time they went to a nightclub. We leave the train and I go and see the beautiful cathedral, the famous Kölner Döm, silhouetted against the night sky. It is beautiful. We go to a nightclub for a bit, and then back to the train.

Finally, Brussels! I get a room in a nice little hotel, 200 Belgian francs with breakfast for a room that's actually a double. The proprietor, very proud of his city, tries to convince me to go and see the 1958 World's Fair site, and I don't have the heart to tell him that I live within a few miles of the New York World's Fair and have yet to visit it. But I do go see the Grande Place and the famous Mannequin Pis.

And so to bed, and up in the morning, and to the airport, and home via Sabena.

The trip is over, I am home. It's been great!
