The big difference between here and France may simply be that I don't speak the language. At any rate, I head for the Piazza San Marco and see the church, with its beautiful ornamentation. I enjoy looking at the Doge's Palace, then climb the Campanile and get a wonderful view of Venice. In the evening, I meet Gerald, the French architecture student, and we go to the Lido. At the end of the day, I am very tired, but I have plans to see a lot more of Venice. It's Thursday, 25 June and I head for Murano, where I buy a pretty orange dish for IL 3500 (a bit under $5 US). Then the Biennale, which does not impress me as much as the Tate Exhibition in London. This year, Robert Rauschenberg has won the First Prize for Painting, and much is being made of the American success. Until now, Europeans have considered us to be a backwater in terms of painting and sculpture. Although I meet my friend Gerald and his friends in the evening, and it's reasonably pleasant, I think I have had enough of Venice. If I feel the same way when I wake up tomorrow morning, I think I will just leave for Florence. ----- Which is what I do. I catch the 11:08 train (finally, a day train!) and arrive in Florence shortly after 3pm. After trying the student places and finding them booked, I meet another girl, J, from Long Island, and take a room with her. She's booked in somewhere else for tonight, but will meet me tomorrow. I have no opinion of Florence yet, but it seems like a friendly city. So I am looking forward to tomorrow. |
