One night, as we were having dinner, the family that hosted my schoolmate Laura and me served us a mushy thing made of overcooked noodles topped with barely browned meat and two sliced raw and tasteless tomatoes. They were very glad with their concotion and explained how they made it with a microwave oven. As they ended they explaination, the husband felt compelled to add "One day you will have microwave ovens to, and you will see how easy it is to cook with them". Needless to say that last comment was the last straw: I exploded in rather broken English that Italy wasn't some underveloped country and it did have microwave ovens, but people didn't use them to make pasta and ended by explaining how spaghetti should be cooked! ("Wow! Only ten minutes?!") 2003. Back to Great Britain. The hottest summer in recent years (probably the hottest after the Mount St. Helen's one) is the right time to visit a country up north, so this August we (Luca and me) headed to Edinburgh. Let me say that this year it was Luca's time to pick the destination for our holidays, and that I would have rather haeded to some place on the coast of the Mediterranean sea, with blowing breezes and scorching sun. So I was a bit worried about this Edinburg thing. Will it be too cold? Will it rain all the time? Will it be too costly? Will I miss the Mediterranean? Will I be able to communicate with the Sottish people who speak in such a thick accent that anytime I happen to see a movie set in Scotland and not dubbed I exit the cinema unsure of what really happened in the movie (and I will not talk about what I understand in Jackie Leven's songs)? |
