Dreaming of Big Island

The winter has been cold and wet and Al and I happily leave Vancouver via West Jet for its first non-stop flight to Kona, Big Island Hawaii ($876.00 each). We stow our bags in the overhead and settle into our seats to find that we are in the middle of a maternity ward. Nine infants and assorted parents! Almost without exception, the babies sleep. West Jet attendants are attentive but they do not supply meals. We content ourselves with a sandwich, Stella Artois for Al and Pinot Grigio for me.

It is 11:30pm when we step into the warm, scented tropical air. I recall the words of my five-year-old granddaughter, Beatrice, who on her first trip to Maui, jumped off the plane and said: "Daddy, I feel totally hula."

A shuttle van takes us the short distance to Budget car rentals and within fifteen minutes and $492 lighter, we are in a Ford Focus on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway (route 19) headed to Kona, seven miles away. The Seaside Hotel is not on the water front and is bigger than I expected. They are having a busy night and we have to park in a public lot (no charge). We are directed to our room - large with two queen size beds (more than we asked for or needed - $98.00). In spite of an amorous cat prowling beneath our windows, we sleep well.
