Report 1581: Greece - Athens and Islands of the Dodecanese - 2008

Trip Description: From Sept 15 - Oct 22 2008 I traveled in Greece and Turkey. I spent the first three weeks in Greece. Much of that time I was on a walking holiday, "Greek Island Hopping", with Ramblers, a walking company from the UK. Part of the time I traveled independently.

In the spring of 2008, I began making arrangements for my most-ambitious trip ever. I would be in Greece and Turkey for more than five weeks. Part of the time I would be walking with groups from the UK, and the rest of the time I would be on my own. You can read my Trip Report about the part of my trip in Turkey at Trip Report #1595.

For the Greece part of my trip, I started by making reservations for 'Greek Island Hopping', a 16-day walking trip of five Greek islands with Ramblers. Ramblers is a company from the UK which does walking vacations all over the world. I had never gone on a Ramblers holiday before, but I had been on many holidays with HF Holidays, also a UK company. I knew what to expect from Ramblers because many of the other guests on HF Holidays vacations had walked with Ramblers also and they told me about it. When I got a Ramblers catalog with the 'Greek Island Hopping' vacation, it sounded like just what I wanted.

The "Greek Island Hopping' would take place mostly on islands of the Dodecanese, a chain of islands just off the coast of Turkey. We would be traveling between the islands on ferries.
