Our four days in New York worked out very well. I had a few concerns before we went, but they all proved to be groundless. Getting around the city was easy; there was lots to see and do, and even more left for future visits; no negative interactions with anybody we met; an excellent introduction to Manhattan. Of course, some things were more expensive than we were used to, but hey, we're in New York.

What Did We Buy?

  • T-shirt (yellow, VROOM, New York city cab - see photo) & sweater for Liam, our 16-month old grandson - T-shirt was bought on 42nd Street, the sweater in SoHo.
  • Large bag for our next trip to France in September 2010.
  • Hello Kitty jeans and top for Aoife, one of our Irish step-grandchildren - at the H & M store on 7th Avenue across from Macy's at 34th Street. Prices at the Hello Kitty store on 42nd Avenue were much more expensive
  • A few Buffalo Sabres items for Brad, one of our sons - at the NHL store on 6th Avenue.
  • Kandinsky and Van Gogh archival prints at MoMA. The Kandinsky print is for Meredith, one of our daughters, who has just moved into a new apartment in Ottawa.
  • I bought a large Saturday Night Live coffee mug at the NBC store and added to my impressive collection of fridge magnets at several places.

Will We Re-Visit New York?

Definitely. We had a great time and are quite comfortable getting around the city. Greenwich Village, SoHo, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, among others, are very appealing parts of New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art beckons for likely a couple more visits. And there are lots of sights yet to discover. We will almost certainly be more focused in the future. One obvious theme can be a Show Tour - which will mean a visit in a different time of the year and an increased budget - but it's something we will be prepared to do at some point over the next few years. We'll be following the New York theater from afar, and when there are several appealing offerings, we'll be back.
