Carlsbad Caverns

We went down to Carlsbad, N.M. and Carlsbad Caverns for a weekend in early December, 2009 and had a wonderful time. The Caverns were spectacular and deserve at least a whole day if not more. We did the King's Palace tour, and then walked in through the Natural entrance to the Caverns and after about an hour and a half hike in, walked around the Big Room.

Meals & Lodging

The lunch room at the Visitor's Center was very adequate so you do not have to leave the premises. The tours we wanted the next day were booked totally so the next day we just took the leisurely route back to Northern New Mexico instead.

Sunday morning we went all over town looking for another place for breakfast but everything is closed during church hours except for Denny's, which was actually very good (much to our surprise).

We had two very good dinners in the town of Carlsbad, one at the Trinity Hotel and one at the Stock Exchange Restaurant. The Trinity Hotel had just opened nine boutique rooms the day we were there. They looked very nice and might be a good alternative to the chain hotels.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Carlsbad, NM. It's on the north end of town but the town is small enough that ten minutes later you are on the south end towards the Caverns. The hotel was very clean, very pleasant and the beds were very, very comfortable. Breakfast was okay.

I would definitely recommend staying in Carlsbad if you are visiting the Caverns. We were all four very pleasantly surprised and it is a very friendly town on top of everything else.
