Destinations: Countries - North America; Regions/Cities - Other North American region Categories: Family/Friends; Hotels/B&Bs; Beach; Day Tours; Sightseeing; Independent Travel; 3-4 people; Adults and Teens Page 1 of 5: We Plan Our TripKatelyn and I at the pool In the fall of 2009, my daughter-in-law, Cathy, asked if I'd like to accompany her and Katelyn, my 14-year-old granddaughter, on a trip to Boston. Of course, I said yes! Katelyn's eighth grade class was going on a trip in May 2010 to Cincinnati. Since Katelyn had been there many times, Cathy had offered her a chance to go to Boston instead. When Cathy looked into frequent-flier trips on AirTran, none were available to Boston on the weekend we wanted to go. So Cathy started to look at what else was available on AirTran. Pretty soon she phoned me and asked if I'd like to go to Puerto Rico instead! I'd LOVE to go to Puerto Rico! In addition to spending a lovely time with them, I'd have a chance to revisit an island I hadn't seen since 1966. My husband George and I and our son Dave moved to Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico in January of 1963 and lived there until 1966. Dave, who is Cathy's husband and Katelyn's father, was just one when we went there, and our son Jim was born while we lived there. We had loved living there and always wanted to return. Ramey was closed as a base many years ago and is now an airport. We didn't have time on this trip to go there. It is about 90 miles from San Juan. Cathy invited me to stay at their house for a few days, and we all flew Wednesday May 16 to San Juan. We were at the San Juan airport by about 1:30pm, and took a quick taxi to our hotel, in the Condado area of San Juan. It was the La Concha Renaissance, a Marriott hotel that had been built in the 1960's and recently renovated. |
