Ohana, our residence on Maui

We left Toronto at 2:00pm and arrived at Kahului Airport on Maui at 4:50pm local time, almost an hour ahead of schedule. Both flight segments - Air Canada from Toronto to San Francisco and United from San Francisco to Kahului - went smoothly, with just enough time at the airport in San Francisco to relax, walk around a bit and get a bite to eat. The weather, even in the open-air airport on Maui, is a wonderful change from the deep freeze we have left behind.

Melissa and her friend Michael met us with leis and a warm welcome. This was my first time meeting Melissa and Michael. They are both very easy people to get to like very quickly. Michael has been living on Maui for a couple of years, is attending school and is bit of an entrepreneur. We are renting our vehicle, a Honda CRV, from Michael. Michael is also an enthusiastic "foodie." Not only does he have great recommendations for restaurants in general, he also specializes. He knows where to get the "best breakfast", "best salad", "best fish taco", "best gelato", "best pizza", "best coffee." Both Melissa and Michael are a lot of fun to be around.

We are staying in an ohana unit, somewhat akin to a granny flat, in a private residence in Ka'anapali Hillsides, an upscale residential area above the Ka'anapali beach area. The ohana is a small, self-contained building beside the pool, separate from the large main house - a great place to stay. We are only a couple of minutes from an excellent beach. If we set the car in neutral we could coast down the hill directly into the parking lot, given a green light across Hwy 30, the main road anywhere on the island. We visit the beach several times during our stay. There is a paved parking lot and a large public access area beside some hotels. While the beach is popular, it is never crowded and parking is always available. Some days it is hard to leave the beach.

An early night.
