Humpback whale off Maui

Off before 8:00am, into Lahaina to meet up with David and Marcel at the Pioneer Inn, then over to sign in and catch the boat at the Pacific Ocean Foundation slip in the harbour. We were on the water between Maui and Lanai for about two hours. There are a lot of humpback whales in Hawaiian waters at this time of year, usually in small groups of two or three. The Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to protecting whales and their ocean environment. There are other choices for whale-watching, but the Pacific Ocean Foundation is a very good option. The excursion includes a lot of apparently expert and interesting commentary. All the crew are able and more than willing to answer any questions.

Back in the late morning, lunch at the Pioneer Inn and then we left David and Marcel in Lahaina while we returned to the Ka'anapali area and spent some time on the beach - a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

There are several luau options on Maui. I wasn't sure that I was interested in any of them before I checked out Maui Revealed. The author provides a brief description and assessment of several, but one stands out as "the classiest of the bunch." And that's how we selected the feast at Lele for dinner this evening. We picked up David and Marcel at their hotel and drove south along Front Street, arriving in time for the 5:30 check-in. A private table, no lineups, two servers, excellent dishes from Hawaii, New Zealand, Tahiti, Samoa, a very enjoyable show - see a sample below - against a stunning background of the ocean and setting sun. One of the highlights of our time on Maui. I acquired a copy of the menu - will try to duplicate some of the dishes back home in Canada.

Next: More beach time
