Green coral, with striking orange vegetation, snorkeling off Maui

Up early to get ready to drive to Ma'alea to catch the Four Winds II by 7:00am and a snorkeling excursion to the crescent-shaped volcanic crater rim-island of Molokini. However, the winds were from the north, making the waves at Molokini too high, so we went to an alternate site for a couple of hours where some of us tried a mini-version of SCUBA called SNUBA, where you breath through a regulator, with the hose tethered to an air tank on a small raft on the surface. We also saw several whales on the way out from Ma'alea and some sea turtles swimming in the ocean on the way back.

Following our snorkeling excursion, we drove past Ma'alea, turned right and drove a few miles south through Kihei and the very upscale Wailea. While Wailea had some very impressive features - homes, hotels, shopping centre and a golf club - I don't think I would fit in very well. To paraphrase Gertrude Stein, there didn't seem to be much there there. We met several people on our various outings who were staying in Kihei.

Mid-afternoon we dropped off David and Marcel at their hotel and returned to Ka'anapali for a swim in the pool and a short visit with Melissa. Back in Lahaina by late afternoon. Another cruise liner, a Holland America ship, sitting off Lahaina - a steady stream of buses dropping off day-trippers and a long line of passengers in the harbour going through a security check before being tendered back to the ship. Glad it's not me.

We were supposed to meet up with David and Marcel at their hotel. Silly us, we went to their room first; we should have just checked the bar.

Dinner was a Luna burger at the Cool Cat Café in Lahaina - Michael's choice for "best burger" on Maui. Believe it.

Next: Over to Moloka'i
