Sun Valley Lodge

While I'd been to the Sun Valley/Ketchum area (Sun Valley is the resort and ski area, Ketchum is the town) in summer and fall, I'd never skied there until this trip. It's now my favorite mountain. We took advantage of a package at the historic Sun Valley Lodge; it was only $129 per person, per night, including a daily lift ticket. So it was a great value.

The lodge was a classy operation and they do a great job with the whole vacation experience. They provide free airport transportation. Itís a historic lodge, which might not be everyoneís cup of tea, but I found it very comfortable. The public spaces were very nice and the amenities - an outdoor skating rink right outside, an outdoor pool heated to 102 degrees, a spa, a Nordic center, Nordic and snowshoe trails, a bowling alley, a variety of shops and restaurants - were great. The service was terrific - our flight was 6pm Sunday, and they let us use the spa locker room/sauna when we were done skiing, before they took us back to the airport.

There are free buses with ski racks that go from the lodge to the different ski base areas (itís only five minutes to Baldy), and to Ketchum (four minutes). You can also walk on a nicely cleared path from the lodge into Ketchum. As long as you are staying at the lodge, in town or near a bus stop, there is no need for a car. There is also an Inn but the Lodge is the place to stay. There are motels and condos in Ketchum too.
