On Baldy, overlooking the town of Ketchum

Baldy - the main mountain here - is known for steep, long fall line runs. The greens are like steep blues or even blacks elsewhere and they donít quit - there arenít many places where they flatten out to give you a break. They say the mountain will tire you out before you're tired of it. This is the place is you want to ski fast GS turns. The grooming is terrific and it has to be, since they only get 200 inches a year (so off piste can be iffy). Even though the runs are steep, I wouldn't really describe them as difficult, because the grooming makes them so easy to ski. The runs held up fantastically throughout the day. And they are just flat-out fun!

There are no real beginner runs on Baldy. There is a separate learning mountain nearer to the lodge called Dollar Mountain, and that's where you'll find what typically would be called greens and easier blues. This can make things inconvenient for a group that has skiers of different abilities. It also means that Baldy is full of competent skiers. There were no teenage snowboarders (in fact few boarders at all), no skiers that looked out of control, and a relative small number of kids (the ones we saw were terrific).

There were also no lift lines. Maybe once or twice, there were a handful of people in front of us. And this, on a weekend, during Seattle's mid-winter break (and the end of President's Weekend).

The day lodges are big, new and nice, with peeled logs and river rock. But, it was the historic Roundhouse that was really special. It was the original 1937 lodge, mid-mountain. It has been expanded but it's beautifully preserved. It has a huge four-sided wood burning fireplace, an unbelievably cozy atmosphere, views, and great food (and not expensive).
