Ketchum is the town that is next to (and predates) the Sun Valley resort. It is the ideal ski town. It reminds me of Aspen, but smaller and less expensive (no Dior here, though there were an astounding number of women wearing fur). Aspen also has more beautiful historic buildings but Ketchum has enough to keep it interesting. This is a town that has paid attention to zoning and design; there are no strip malls, fast food joints, or sprawl like you find in and around a lot of the Colorado or Tahoe resorts. There are good restaurants in all price points. It's the kind of place where the local institution - The Pioneer - actually has great food and is very reasonably priced. Everyone goes there (go early or wait). Also there's a great grocery store. I'm a sucker for a small town with a good grocery. You can get Delice de Bourgogne and Vietnamese summer rolls in the deli.

Getting here is the issue. The airport has been described as a landing strip in a fog bank. Fully 50% of winter flights are diverted to Boise. Then they bus you up, three hours. Some people just book Boise and rent a car, at least then you are in control of the situation. It's a boring drive (I've done it in summer and fall) but at least there are no fearsome mountain passes. There are plans to build a new airport, further from town, but they are still plans. The airport's too small for commercial jets, so you're on a prop plane (that doesn't bother me but I know it does some people). But, this is one reason there are no lift lines, so, it's not all bad. Just be prepared for busing.
