On March 10 I flew from Pittsburgh to Paris on Delta, and on March 11 from Paris to Malta. Malta is a small group of small islands located in the Mediterranean between Sicily and North Africa. The islands are called Malta, Gozo, and Comino. It is an independent country, and has been a member of the EU for about five years.

I took a public bus from the airport to Valletta, the main town of Malta, and then another bus from Valletta to Mellieha, the town in which I would stay the first week. The Malta buses are from the 1930's and beloved by tourists. They are true rattletraps. Most have no doors and the doors are always open on the few that have doors. If you have to stand, don't stand near the doors! Sadly, these characteristic buses will be replaced this summer.

Nearing Mellieha, I asked the student next to me to show me where to get off. He inquired the name of my hotel and used his smart phone to figure out the location of the hotel, and told me where to get off.

I was staying at the Solana Hotel. I would be there the first night on my own, recovering from jet lag, and the next day the rest of the group from HF would join me. HF is a UK walking company that I have walked with many times in Europe, particularly the UK, Italy, Spain, and Turkey. Every day two walks of varying lengths (about 6-11 miles) are planned. There is plenty of sightseeing along with the walking, and the format is ideal for me.

My hotel room was spacious, facing a quiet area, with a really nice balcony. I swam in the indoor pool. There is an outdoor one also, but the Solana and all the hotels I stayed in did not have outdoor swimming yet.
