The Castle at Erice

Erice was the other reason I went to Trapani. It is on top of a mountain (at 3000 feet) about 15 miles from Trapani. I took a bus there which wound around switchbacks, and it was getting colder and more misty as we went. At Erice, clouds swirled at eye level and below all day.

It is a medieval mountaintop town with a castle and many very well-preserved buildings. Its history starts with the Phoenicians. It commands a view of the whole surrounding area, the plain of Trapani, and the sea, when the clouds part. I toured the castle, took lots of photos, had lunch, and walked all over the town.

When I got back to the B & B, Giovanni was there and asked me if I still needed to buy a cellphone. I did so we went to a nearby cellphone store and I bought the phone and a month's worth of calls. I was glad I had it later to communicate with the other places I stayed.
