I started the day with the two open-air markets - La Vucciria and Ballaro. I had spent a few days in Palermo on a previous trip (this was my third trip to Sicily) and remembered these markets fondly. A Sicilian market is like you imagine all Italian markets would have been in the early 1900s.

I walked up to the Palermo Cathedral and then on to the Royal Palace. Since it was 9 to see the palace, I decided to have lunch first, and stopped in a panificio for a slice of pizza and two almond cookies.... the almond confections are wonderful in this part of the world and I had actually had an outstanding, memorable almond paste cookie in the Malta airport. Then back to the Royal Palace.

First was the Palatine Chapel, totally encrusted with mosaics of gold, built in 1160 or thereabouts. I love very old places. Then down to the Norman Castle (part of the same complex) and then down again to the Punic walls ... wow! I had not visited the Royal Palace before, but Dario had insisted I go, and it is well worth the trip and the time.

I walked back into town and visited the area where I had stayed when I was in Palermo the first time, near the Opera House and the Politeama.
