The sea at Tropea

La Bussola is a delightful family-run hotel, and the food is out of this world. One evening I had swordfish, and the cook proudly came out to my table with the raw, fresh slice of swordfish on a plate, to show me. And it was lovely, and delicious when grilled. Every meal I had there was wonderful.

Sunday morning I took the little train to Tropea, the largest town in the area, on the coast, and a beautiful place. Of course it was delightful on a Sunday with all the families out enjoying lunch in the piazza, walking, shopping, and visiting together.

Tropea is an old town which sits on a bluff above the gorgeous turquoise sea, giving wonderful views. There is a 12th-century cathedral. I walked all over town then had lunch and walked down a path to the sea. I took off my shoes and walked on the beach and in the water - bliss! This town would make a nice base for seeing Calabria, as it is very pleasant, has good train connections, and is right on the sea coast.
