Page 8 of 13: Day 8 - Bucharest City Tour, Village Museum

Wake up 7:00, Breakfast 7:30, Depart 8:30.

Actually, breakfast is ready by 6:30 and you can eat then if you like. Full complement of breads, jams, yogurt (unfortunately, the American sweet variety), bacon, ham, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, smoked salmon, etc. I didnít pass up the opportunity to have lox and bagels. Best start to a breakfast that I know. They also had scrambled eggs in a rich cream sauce. Excellent. The hotel obviously takes pride in their food.

I found the city tour just so-so but I was probably burnt out a bit by then. We didnít find the quaint areas with outdoor cafes, ice cream, etc. Not to worry. A little exploring later in the afternoon took care of that. What was most enjoyable during the city tour was a 1.5 hour visit to the Village Museum. The museum has actual houses from different regions of Romania dating back to the 1930s. I don't remember how many houses there were but certainly more than you can see in 1.5 hours. I highly recommend this museum but you need at least half a day to fully appreciate what you are seeing.

The afternoon was free so we decided to go exploring using a complimentary city map from the hotel. Our 3.5-4 mile stroll took us past many restaurants as well as a farmers' market. While there, I decided to try some mititei which are skinless link sausages. I had similar sausages in Belgrade but these were much better. They had less fat and lots of garlic. While eating, a guy approached us and tried to sell us a tazer. We declined and finally got rid of him. I guess it's all part of the adventure.

For dinner that night, we backtracked to a local cafe about 1/2 mile from the hotel. Had shopska salad, grilled lamb, polenta and a beer.
