Page 7 of 12: Day 7 Crossing the Border

We easily made the 9am deadline for being within the departure area for the US bound ferry as the port was at the end of the road. The sailing was at 10:30 - the early deadline in place to allow US immigration clearance to take place on the Canadian side. It was slightly choppy journey of 1.5 hours into Port Angeles, but the ferry is large enough so that the motion was not uncomfortable. Signposting was unclear from the US ferry port, but we headed left and found ourselves on the road to Port Townsend, 45 miles away. It is a charming little seaport town with a long and chequered history: it had been a major trading port during the nineteenth century but lost its dominance to Seattle.

We checked into The Bishop Victorian Hotel on the street behind the main one on the lower (waterside) part of town. It is a former cigar warehouse that had been used as a rooming house for civilian workers to the military for many years and then converted to a curiously furnished guesthouse type establishment. There aren’t many hotels in the area (certainly not as central) but I think we would have to describe this as odd and not particularly comfortable – the suite was very cramped. We went out to seek a late lunch and happened upon a small café that did good sandwiches and had a small deck overlooking the water. A perfect spot for a relaxing meal. We worked this off later with a trip on foot to the nearest food shop for a few supplies – a hike up a long run of steps and then a walk through the upper residential area.

Our late lunch meant we didn’t want much of a dinner, so went for appetisers and drinks at the nearby Alchemy Bistro which was busy and seemed popular with the locals.
