Dubrovnik from the wall Our group was small, just 11 people including our leader Jenny. All were from the UK except me. We had a very good time together. For our first full day, we went to the bus stop, bought tickets, and took the bus to the walled city, about 15 minutes ride. It was a beautiful sunny warm day. Jenny took us around the old city, showing us the highlights. It is a wonderful well-preserved medieval city, quite small. During the war in the 1990s, Dubrovnik was shelled from gun positions on top of the hills just beyond the city. A map at the entrance gate shows the buildings that were obliterated and the ones on which the roofs have been replaced. We walked out another gate and down the coast, giving us beautiful views of Dubrovnik and of the turquoise sea. Jenny left us here, with directions for getting the bus back, so we had the rest of the day to explore the city on our own. I did the walk on top of the ancient wall which surrounds the city. You can walk all the way around, stopping for the amazing views of the city and of the sea and islands beyond. I got an audio guide which was very interesting. The wall is quite high in places, and you can see the surrounding area. When I was ready, I rode back to the hotel in the public bus. |
