The islands from an island

We had another gorgeous, warm day for our boat rides and walks on the islands north of Dubrovnik. The islands extend all along the coastline of Croatia, and are considered one of the major attractions of Croatia.

We walked to the harbor and got on board the boat we would have to ourselves for the whole day. It was about an hour's ride on a glassy sea to our first island. We walked across the island and met the boat on the other side. All the islands we visited were inhabited.

At the second island, we came onshore and had coffee at a bar before hiking up a steep hill to the top, which had a ruined fort and a wonderful view. We sat down in the grass and enjoyed our lunch in the sun, then walked down to our boat.

At the third island, we walked through the little settlement to an ancient fortified church and went inside. We walked up the inside stairs to the roof of the church, which was almost flat and covered in bricks. The view was great, and Jenny showed us a hatch on the roof which could be lifted in order to pour boiling oil on the enemy below. There was also a well inside the church, so the church could be used as a refuge in times of trouble.
