Home is where the art is

Still pretty satiated from our prior day's gorge, we decided on coffee and pastries for our breakfast. We took a walk in "our" neighborhood to the Cake Cafe & Bakery. I had a blueberry filled croissant, and hubby had some coffee cake. But the icing on the cake was a sublime (yes I love bad puns) lime cupcake with lime butter cream frosting! We shared this delectable concoction, but I wish I had gotten my own!

After this flavor explosion we visited some bookstores, and walked around the French Market. We had promised ourselves we weren't going to eat lunch, because we were going to try to get an early table at Irene's Cuisine. They take few reservations, and an early arrival is a must to get a table without a long wait, or at least I read.

But the munchies got the better of us so we sat at the counter of the N'awlins Cafe & Spice Emporium, which I thought was going to be touristy (I try to avoid things that say "N'awlins"!), but it was insanely good. We shared a plate of creole jambalaya, but the winner was a small (again wish I'd gotten my own!), hot sausage pie! Small spicy sausage crumbles surrounded by a bed of greens with an amazing dressing that my bread got soaked in for sure. Read about it later, and they are a third generation family run place, so I felt better about stopping!

We did make Irene's, but simply were not hungry enough to get the full experience, and there were some wonderful dishes on the menu, like duck and lamb. We shared an appetizer of paneed oysters and shrimp, really tasty. We also had an order of meatballs and shared an entry of canneloni al forno. All very good, but did not wow me as much as my smaller bites of the day!

What we should have done was gotten barbeque outside of Vaughn's Lounge while we were waiting to hear Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers. Well, we saw the BBQ Swingers and Corey Henry on trombone, because Kermit didn't make it, not sure why, maybe tired of playing to Treme fans ... like us! It was still a blast.
